Frequently Asked Questions
What is the purpose of the SideWalker?
The SideWalker is employed for teaching dogs to walk calmly on a leash, discouraging pulling, and strengthening their on-leash obedience.
How does the SideWalker work?
A sensor positioned beneath the collar strap of the SideWalker detects pressure, activated when the dog pulls on the leash or when the leash is gently tugged to guide the dog into the desired position. Upon activation, the sensor administers either a vibration or electronic stimulation. The intensity of the SideWalker should be adjusted to a level sufficient to divert the dog's attention from pulling. Typically, dogs swiftly grasp that the sensation ceases when the pulling behavior stops.
How do I fit the SideWalker to my dog?
The collar strap should be positioned at the narrowest part of the dog's neck, just beneath its ears. It should fit snugly but allow for rotation as the dog moves. If the collar is too tight, it may inadvertently trigger the vibration or stimulation when the dog isn't pulling. Conversely, if it's too loose, the sensation may be inconsistent or not felt by the dog at all. To maintain consistent pressure during pulling, ensure that the SideWalker is positioned on the collar strap opposite the 'D' ring, where the leash attaches.
How long does the battery charge last?
The battery life varies based on how often the collar is used and the dog's pulling habits. A collar worn extensively and activated frequently will require more frequent recharging compared to a collar worn briefly and activated infrequently. Typically, a charge can last several days for a collar worn for 1-2 hours daily with low to moderate activation.
How long does the re-chargeable battery last and is it replaceable?
The rechargeable battery typically lasts for several years. When the duration of a recharge noticeably diminishes, it's time to replace the rechargeable battery. Replacement batteries are conveniently available from DogWatch, and the process of replacing the battery is straightforward.
Do I need to take the SideWalker off the dog when not in use?
Yes. When the SideWalker is not in use, it should be removed from the dog and switched off. This precaution prevents unintended activation and conserves the battery charge.
How do I pick the setting that is best for my dog?
Activate the SideWalker and select the 'V' (Vibration) mode. Place the SideWalker on your dog and attach a leash to the 'D' ring. Gently tug on the leash, observing closely for any response, such as a head shake, ear twitch, or slight change in behavior. If there's no reaction, increase the setting to the next level and repeat the procedure. Once you notice a subtle reaction from your dog, that setting is a suitable starting point for training your dog’s behavior.
How long will it take for my dog to stop pulling (or to respond when I pull)?
Numerous factors influence the speed at which your dog's behavior will adapt, primarily the dog's individual personality and the training environment. Typically, dogs start grasping the correlation between pulling and the vibration/stimulation after experiencing the collar's activation several times. The reduction in pulling behavior can be swift for some dogs and more gradual for others. If there's no discernible improvement in pulling behavior after a reasonable trial period, ensure the collar fits well and the contact posts are of the correct size. If the collar fits properly and pulling persists, consider increasing the SideWalker setting by one level.
How do I know the SideWalker is working?
Activate the SideWalker. If the Status Light on the SideWalker flashes green, indicating a fully charged battery, the device should be operational. Additionally, a brief vibration upon turning it on and after changing the setting confirms that the SideWalker is functioning correctly.
How do I test the SideWalker?
Activate the SideWalker in the 'V' setting (Vibration). Depress the pressure sensor beneath the collar strap. (Note: There is a 10-second delay after turning on the SideWalker before it activates.) To assess the stimulation settings, adjust the SideWalker dial to one of the stimulation levels (1-5). Position the Test Light (included with the SideWalker) over the contact posts, then press down on the pressure sensor beneath the collar strap. The Test Light should illuminate as pressure is applied.
How big does my dog need to be to use the SideWalker?
The SideWalker is safe and effective on dogs as small as 6 pounds.
How old does my dog need to be to use the SideWalker?
We recommend waiting until the dog is 4-6 months old
Is the stimulation going to hurt my dog?
No, the electronic stimulation is gentle. Picture a faint tickle or a mild static sensation, akin to touching a metal doorknob after walking across a carpet in your socks. This stimulation is intended to capture your pet's attention, much like a light tap on the shoulder.
Is the SideWalker waterproof?
Yes.
Is there a warranty on the SideWalker?
Yes. The warranty is one year.
Are there health restrictions?
If you have any concerns about your dog's health or ability to use the SideWalker due to a medical condition, we recommend consulting with your veterinarian. It's important that the dog is healthy enough to walk on the leash safely.
Which contact posts should I use?
For dogs with long hair or a thick coat, we advise using long posts. Short posts should suffice for dogs with short hair and no thick coat.
Will weather affect how the SideWalker works? (Cold, hot etc.)
The components within the SideWalker are designed to function within a range of minus 25 degrees (F) to 125 degrees (F). However, a sudden and substantial temperature shift may briefly interrupt certain SideWalker functions until the device acclimates to the new temperature.
