Frequently Asked Questions
What is a remote trainer?
Remote trainers enable effective communication with your pet. When used correctly, they reinforce commands and address undesirable behaviors in your dog. These tools offer precise timing and consistency, essential elements for successful training.
How does a remote trainer work?
A remote training system comprises two primary components: a handheld 'transmitter' and a 'receiver' attached to the dog's collar. Using the transmitter, you send signals to the receiver on the dog's collar. Depending on the training scenario, you can choose from four signal options to send to the receiver:
1. Audible tone or vibration
2. Brief stimulation (1 second)
3. Continuous stimulation (up to 8 seconds)Please note: The V-10 Vibration Trainer does not offer stimulation options; instead, it features 10 levels of vibration and an audible tone.
The signal from the dog's receiver collar can capture your dog's attention or divert him from undesirable behavior. By complying with your obedience command or ceasing the unwanted behavior, your dog quickly learns to avoid or halt the tone or sensation emitted by the receiver.
* 'Stimulation' may also be referred to as 'correction,' 'training stimulation,' or 'shock.'
Will the stimulation signal hurt my dog?
The 'stimulation' generated by the collar aims to divert your dog's attention by delivering a mildly unpleasant yet harmless sensation, akin to the static shock experienced when walking across a carpet in socks.
The BigLeash training collar offers various stimulation levels. Many dog trainers discover that they can attain their desired outcomes using low-intensity stimulation, often barely noticeable to humans. Additionally, all BigLeash models feature both an audible tone and vibration signal. This enables you to condition your dog to associate the audible tone or vibration with the training correction, potentially eliminating the necessity for stimulation altogether.
Which stimulation level is correct for my dog?
Begin by using the lowest level of stimulation and gradually increase it as required. You'll recognize the appropriate stimulation level when your dog responds with a mild twitch, a perk of the ears, or a reaction akin to a quick tug on a leash.
This same methodology applies to the vibration levels of the V-10 Vibration Trainer.
What is the difference between “Brief” and “Continuous” stimulation?
Short stimulation serves as a rapid 'attention getter,' lasting only a fraction of a second, regardless of the button's duration. Users often liken this sensation to that of a mosquito bite.
Continuous stimulation provides a pulsating sensation that persists until you release the transmitter button (with a maximum duration of up to 8 seconds).
What kind of safety features do the BigLeash Remote Trainers have?
Alongside its diverse training levels and options for audible and vibration modes, the BigLeash offers a convenient 'level 0' setting to prevent inadvertent signal transmission when the collar is on the dog but not in active use. Furthermore, the BigLeash S-15 model incorporates an automatic shut-off feature, restricting continuous stimulation to a maximum of 8 seconds.
What age should my dog be before I can begin using a remote trainer?
The ideal age varies depending on the individual dog and their readiness for training. It's important that your dog has a fundamental grasp of expectations and understands basic commands. While some trainers suggest waiting until the dog is five or six months old, others may commence training with younger dogs who have already grasped basic commands.
Can my DogWatch Dealer assist me with training?
Many DogWatch Dealers offer assistance with training or will recommend a local trainer.
What is the correct way to use remote trainer?
Remote trainers are intended for two basic purposes:
1. To assist with training and reinforcing desirable behaviors, such as obedience commands. Your dog learns to “turn-off” the vibration or stimulation by performing the command correctly.
2. To correct unwanted behaviors, such as digging, chewing, jumping up, etc. Your dog learns to associate the vibration or stimulation with the unwanted behavior and, therefore, stops doing the behavior.
Remote trainers are not recommended for dogs with a history of aggressive behavior unless being used by experienced dog trainers.
See Training Tips and the Owner’s Guide for more specific training information. There are many books, videos, and online guides, which provide additional remote trainer information. How tight should the BigLeash receiver be fastened around my dog's neck?
The receiver collar should fit comfortably snug around your dog's neck. If it seems like your dog isn't responding to the stimulation, consider adjusting the collar strap to ensure a better fit. Ensure that the collar is snug enough for the contact points to make proper contact through the undercoat.
My dog has some irritation on his neck from the receiver collar.
This is likely a result of skin irritation caused by the contact posts rubbing against the throat. One of the following scenarios may have occurred:
1. The collar was worn by your dog for an extended period. Avoid leaving the collar on your dog for more than eight hours per day.
2. The collar is either too tight or too loose. Ensure the collar fits properly. You can adjust the positioning of the contact posts along your dog's neck to help prevent skin irritation. Can I cut the excess collar strap off after I fit the collar to my dog?
Yes – please do.
How do I insert the charger into the receiver collar?
The charging port for the receiver collar is located on the back of the receiver, underneath the protective tab. Lift the protective tab to insert the charger, and make sure to securely replace the tab after charging. Do NOT remove the screw that secures the protective tab.
How long do rechargeable batteries last?
The battery charge duration varies based on collar usage. If the collar is used intermittently and turned off when not in use, the battery charge will last longer compared to frequent corrections or leaving the collar on when not needed. For optimal performance, we suggest charging the collar when it's not in use, ideally nightly. Regular charging won't harm the battery or reduce its lifespan.
What is the warranty on these collars?
DogWatch Inc. offers a 2-year limited warranty on both parts and labor for the BigLeash transmitter and receiver, effective from the date of purchase. Additionally, a 1-year warranty covers parts and labor for batteries from the purchase date. Accessories such as chargers and splitter cables carry a 1-year warranty. The warranty excludes repairs or replacements resulting from owner or dog misuse, improper maintenance, or lost units. Water damage to transmitters labeled as 'water resistant' is not covered and may incur repair charges. Alteration of the unit or unauthorized repair attempts void the warranty. The warranty is non-transferable.
For further warranty details, please refer to the additional information provided.
Can my dog's collar receiver be accidentally activated by a neighbor's remote trainer?
No, our remote trainer utilizes a distinct code programmed for each collar. To receive the signal, the training collar must be 'married' to a specific transmitter.
